Speaking Mastery

IELTS Speaking
Strategy Guide

11 to 14 minutes, three structured parts. Learn how to structure answers naturally, master cue card timing, and build Band 7 fluency.

The Three Parts of Speaking

Part 1 • 4–5 Mins

Introduction & Familiar Topics

Short conversational questions about daily life (work, study, hometown, routines). Aim for 2–3 natural sentences per answer.

Part 2 • 3–4 Mins

Individual Long Turn (Cue Card)

1 minute to prepare notes, then speak for up to 2 minutes. The examiner stops you when time expires.

Part 3 • 4–5 Mins

Two-Way Abstract Discussion

In-depth discussion linked to Part 2, exploring societal trends, causes, effects, and future predictions.

Jot down 3 to 4 keywords on the paper provided, not full written sentences. Structure your talk around: Who/What → When/Where → Action → Why it matters.

Keep Speaking:

Aim to speak until the examiner stops you at the 2-minute mark.

If You Finish Early:

Extend your idea by adding reasons, personal comparisons, or future thoughts.
