Mastering
IELTS Listening

Four parts, 40 questions, 30 minutes. Understanding test constraints and mandatory accuracy is the foundation for a high score.

1. Test Structure & Context

Contextual Shift

Parts 1 & 2: Social needs, featuring a dialogue (Part 1) and a monologue (Part 2).

Parts 3 & 4: Academic contexts, involving group discussions (Part 3) and an academic monologue (Part 4).

Single Opportunity

You will hear the recording once only. Answer as you listen; do not wait until the end.

Transfer Time

Unlike Reading, you get 10 minutes at the end to transfer answers to the official sheet.

2. Instruction Adherence

Word Limits (Rules of Engagement)

Pay close attention to requirements like "NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS". Exceeding this limit results in a penalty, regardless of information accuracy.

Gap-Filling Protocol

Only transfer missing words. If the prompt says "in the..." and the answer is "morning", writing "in the morning" is marked incorrect.

Multiple Answer Questions

For letters or Roman numerals, write exactly the requested number. Over-writing results in an automatic zero.

3. Mandatory Accuracy

Spelling

Accuracy is mandatory. Both US and UK spellings are accepted.

Formats

Standard formats for numbers, dates, and currencies are all acceptable.

Case Style

You can use Upper or Lower case freely; there is no penalty.

4. Strategy & Preparation

Use Preparation Time

Scan the questions before the audio starts. Predict the Type of information needed—is it a local name, a number, or a countable noun?

Optional Information

Words in [brackets] in answer keys are optional; they are correct but not required for marks.

Technical Fit

For gap-fills, ensure the chosen word fits the grammar of the sentence perfectly.
