Three sections, 40 questions, 60 minutes. Master the strategies used by high-band scorers to conquer the most challenging academic texts.
The Academic Reading test consists of three sections with 40 questions to be completed in a total of 60 minutes. The texts are of an academic nature, taken from journals, books, magazines, and newspapers, and are written for a non-specialist audience.
Unlike the Listening test, you are not given 10 minutes at the end to transfer your answers. All answers must be written on the sheet within the 60-minute limit.
If a question is too difficult, leave it and move on. You can return to difficult questions after answering the easier ones. Finishing the test is vital for a high score.
Always check the word limit for completion tasks (e.g., 'NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS'). Exceeding this limit results in zero marks for that answer.
Answers must be spelled correctly. US and UK spellings are both acceptable. Ensure gap-fill words fit the grammar of the sentence.
Look for specific info for short-answers. Don't just search for exact words; be alert for paraphrases and synonyms used in the text.
Read the whole statement carefully before deciding. Don't rush into matching single words.
False means the text contradicts the statement. Not Given means no info exists.
Identify the main idea or "focus" of the paragraph. Distinguish it from subsidiary or background info.
Don't rely only on the first or last sentence; the main idea can be anywhere in the block.
Don't Panic:
You don't need prior knowledge of the topic. Everything you need is right in the text.
Check Your Work:
If you finish early, double-check that your answers align with the question boxes.
