Executive Summary

Write from Dictation (WFD) is the final question format in the PTE exam session. You listen to an audio recording playing a short sentence containing 3 to 15 words. You must type the sentence into the response box exactly as spoken. There are 3 to 4 WFD prompts per exam.

Write from Dictation carries immense weight: it is arguably the single most important task for achieving high scores in both Listening and Writing.

Every word spelled accurately earns 1 point.

1. The First-Letter Memory Typing Routine

Attempting to write full words while listening often causes you to fall behind the speaker's cadence. Instead, apply the First-Letter Method:

Step 1 (During Audio Playback): Type only the initial letter of each word as you hear it.
Step 2 (Immediate Expansion): As soon as the audio ends, immediately expand the first letters into full words while the sentence is fresh in your working memory.

Capitalization: First word of the sentence must be capitalized.
End Punctuation: Sentence must end with a full stop (period).
Plural Noun Endings (-s / -es): Check whether nouns require singular or plural endings based on context clues (e.g., "many student" vs "many students").
Subject-Verb Agreement: Ensure verbs match singular or plural subjects (e.g., "evidence shows" vs "data show").

5. Note-Taking Expansion & Auditory Cortex Retention

When practicing Write from Dictation, apply the Auditory Memory Loop:

Sub-Vocal Echo: For the first 2 seconds after the sentence ends, repeat the vocal cadence silently in your head. Do not look away from your keyboard.
Keyboard Touch Typing: If you can touch-type at 40+ words per minute, type directly into the PTE response box rather than writing on the laminated scratchboard notebook. Direct typing saves 10–15 seconds per question and eliminates handwriting transcription errors.

6. Time Management & Response Verification Protocol

Since Write from Dictation appears at the very end of the Listening section, poor time management in earlier items (such as Summarize Spoken Text or Multiple Choice) can leave you with less than 3 minutes to complete 4 dictation prompts.

Rule 1 (Reserve 4 Minutes): Keep track of the section countdown clock. Ensure you have at least 4 minutes remaining when reaching WFD items.
Rule 2 (Spend 45–60 Seconds Per Item): Allocate 10 seconds to listen and type first letters, 20 seconds to expand words, and 15 seconds to run the spelling and grammar audit.

6. Multi-Accent Audio Adaptation

PTE dictation audio recordings feature diverse native accents:

UK Accent: Non-rhotic 'r' sounds (e.g., "car" pronounced /kɑː/).
US Accent: Flapped 't' sounds (e.g., "water" pronounced /wɔːtər/).
Australian Accent: Raised vowel sounds.
